JC REPUBLICAN, 01 JAN 1915, Brown's Creek items, pg 5: A few days ago Mrs. Isaac Nees received word that her brother, Wm. Atkins, had died at the home of his son near Corning, Kansas, Dec. 14. Mr. Atkins was one of the pioneer settlers of this township, and one owned the place where Frank Blacker now lives. The Corning Gazette has this to say about him: Mr. Atkins was a schoolmate of Abraham Lincoln and attended school in the little old log schoolhouse. He and Mr. Lincoln made rails and cut cord wood together. He was born where Springfield, Ill., now stands. The funeral sermon was preached from the text, 2nd Cor., 5:1; the same text being used at his father's funeral twelve years ago. The Bible used on this occasion was about 175 years old, the deceased having received it from his grandmother.
